Meet the team: Scott Parker

Name: Scott Parker

Job title: Programmer

When did you start working at Skills Forward?

I started at Skills Forward as an intern in 2013.

What do you do on a typical day?

Firstly, I catch up with the team, looking at actions and workload for the day and how it should be prioritised and organised as well as helping them solve any problems or issues they have.

Our tasks comprise of attending to customers tickets via the web or calls and completing these based on our SLAs and the urgency.

We’re a tightknit team so we catch up with each other regularly. We always have a good chat as a team, about work and life in general, and the mood is always really fun.

Has your role changed since you started?

Massively – I started as an intern the responsibilities increased every week. It was fast paced and I really loved it. Now, with the experience I’ve gained, mentoring new colleagues and junior staff has become a big part of my role.

What’s your best memory of working at Skills Forward?

There are a lot of good memories so it’s very hard to choose! The branding change and move to our new office are stand out moments as it showed the company’s progression and evolution.

I have to give a shout out to the team. We’re always supporting one another, learning from each other and we all pitch in. We have a laugh too, which is so important for morale.

What’s the best thing about working at Skills Forward?

Working at an education software company means that I’m constantly developing my skills and knowledge. It’s been great to learn and develop new technologies and we always try and stay ahead of the curve and innovate, problem solve and improve before our customers even have to ask.

I sound like a broken record, but the team I work with is amazing, very helpful and understanding not just with work but personally too. The office atmosphere is second to none and the people are great to work. Everyone gets on with each other well and it’s a very inclusive environment.

Also, as part of the NCFE group, we really have a sense of purpose. We know that we are helping learners and tutors achieve their goals and hopefully helping the next generation on the career path of their dreams and that’s amazing.

What are your goals for the future?

I would like to progress in my role to the next step of management and to gain all the skills and knowledge needed to be a full stack developer.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.

Do you have a secret talent/specialist skills?

I love creating memes – they have been good at lifting the mood during lockdown especially.
